If you grew up in a house that had a basement, then you know about going downstairs to get away with something, and that happens here.
The first thing is that you've got free music every night of the week, barring weekends when you pay a whopping five dollars to get in. On Monday nights they have "open mic," but don't let that fool you. There are working musicians who are too intimidated to broach taking the stage.
The bar is reminiscent of a shotgun shack, long and rectangular, with one dollar bills taped behind the counter and on the ceiling. This is a great place to bring a date, and one you can walk in by yourself. Did I mention the music is being played in a dive bar?
Part of the appeal is that people who are into Jazz rarely speak of its exclusivity, and when you come here, its assumed you're in the same club. If you're not a Jazz aficionado, its like being asked to keep a secret. The charm is undeniable.
There are 20 plus taps behind the bar and the acoustics lend themselves to accommodating both loud music, and conversation: Meaning you won't have to shout for your beer or liquor. Just watch your attendance...it can be habit forming.
